Petan Molly - Poecilia kykesis Fish Profile & Care Guide

Introduction

The Péten Molly (Poecilia kykesis) is a captivating species of poeciliid fish native to the freshwater and brackish environments of Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. As part of the Sailfin Molly group, males are distinguished by their striking, sail-like dorsal fins that enhance their visual appeal. While the body lacks vibrant colouration, the black-edged scales often create a spotted pattern, particularly in mature males. Additionally, males display a distinctive short sword-like extension on the lower edge of the caudal fin, further setting them apart within the species.

Maintaining a small group of Péten Mollies in an aquarium can promote natural behaviours and reduce stress. A recommended practice is to keep more females than males, ideally in a ratio of two females to each male, to prevent excessive male attention towards individual females. Péten Mollies are delightfully peaceful, making them ideal tankmates for a variety of other fish. They can coexist harmoniously with a range of species, including other livebearers like guppies and platies and non-aggressive species like tetras and Corydoras catfish. It's essential to avoid housing them with fin-nipping or overly aggressive fish, as swordtail mollies have elongated fins that can be targeted. Providing ample hiding spots with plants and decorations can help all inhabitants feel secure and establish territories.

When setting up an aquarium for Péten Mollies, it's crucial to replicate their natural environment as closely as possible. A tank of at least 80 litres is recommended to accommodate their active swimming habits and potential size. Maintaining water temperatures and medium to hard water hardness will closely replicate their natural environment. Incorporating aquatic plants provides shelter and supports their herbivorous diet, as they feed primarily on algae and plant matter. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential to manage their substantial waste production and ensure optimal water quality.

Natural Habitat

The Péten Molly is endemic to the Usumacinta River drainage and Lake Petén Itzá, spanning regions from Guatemala to Belize and the Yucatán Peninsula in southeastern Mexico. This species inhabits shallow coastal waters ranging from brackish to freshwater, including tidal lagoons, lakes, creeks, and pools. It thrives in diverse water conditions, from clear to highly turbid waters, and is found over various substrate types such as mud, sand, and clay. The Péten Molly is often associated with submerged and emergent aquatic vegetation, which provides essential shelter and feeding grounds.

Breeding

The Péten Molly is a livebearing species, with females giving birth to fully formed, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Males of all sizes display a combination of courtship rituals and opportunistic mating behaviours, a unique trait within the species. Females can produce between 10 and 60 fry every 6 to 8 weeks, with newborns measuring approximately 8 to 12 millimetres in length. Adult Péten Mollies rarely prey on their offspring like many other fish species. Additionally, they can hybridise with closely related species such as Poecilia velifera and Poecilia latipinna, often resulting in fertile hybrids.

Diet & Feeding

The Péten Molly exhibits omnivorous feeding habits with a strong preference for plant-based materials. In their natural habitats, these fish primarily consume algae and other plant matter, grazing on available vegetation. In aquarium settings, it is paramount to replicate this diet by providing a variety of plant-based foods, such as blanched spinach, zucchini, peas, and lettuce. Supplementing their diet with high-quality vegetable flakes or pellets can also be beneficial. While their diet is predominantly herbivorous, occasional offerings of protein-rich foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms can be included to ensure a balanced nutritional intake.
