Ocellifer Catfish - Synodontis ocellifer Fish Profile & Care Guide
Introduction
The Ocellifer Catfish (Synodontis ocellifer) is a fascinating species of upside-down Catfish native to the rivers of northern and western Africa. Valued for its distinctive pattern of spots and ocelli, this species boasts an elegant yet striking appearance, making it a prized addition to freshwater aquariums. With a generally peaceful temperament, the Ocellifer Catfish thrives in well-structured environments that cater to its natural behaviours.
While typically docile, the Ocellifer Catfish can become territorial toward conspecifics or similar species. To minimize aggression, it is advisable to keep them singly or in sufficiently large groups to disperse potential dominance disputes. A well-decorated tank with ample hiding places and visual barriers will help maintain harmony within the aquarium. Suitable tankmates include peaceful fish larger than 5 cm (2 inches), as smaller species may be at predation risk. Ideal companions include medium-sized Tetras, Barbs, Gouramis, Knifefish, large loricariids, Rainbowfish, and robust West African Cichlids.
For the Ocellifer Catfish, a spacious aquarium is not just a luxury, it's a necessity. This active species requires a minimum tank length of 4 feet (120 cm) for juveniles. A soft, sandy substrate is recommended to protect their sensitive barbels, and ample hardscape elements such as bogwood, rocky caves, Plastic tubes, and robust aquatic plants should be provided to create shaded retreats. Equally important is leaving open swimming areas along the front of the tank to accommodate their natural movement patterns. Given their hearty appetite and substantial waste production, a high-capacity external canister filter is strongly recommended for maintaining water quality.
For the Ocellifer Catfish, well-oxygenated water with a moderate current is preferred. Frequent partial water changes are essential to keep nitrate levels in check. As a nocturnal species, this species feels most comfortable under subdued lighting. Additionally, heaters should be equipped with protective guards to prevent accidental burns, as these Catfish have a habit of resting in dark crevices.
The colouration of the Ocellifer Catfish varies from a yellowish hue with brownish undertones to shades of grey, gradually fading into a pale white underside. Large black spots adorn the body and adipose fin, sometimes with lighter centres resembling eyespots. Juveniles exhibit a speckled pattern extending onto all fins, though this gradually fades with age. This unique appearance and intriguing behaviours make the Ocellifer Catfish a captivating choice for aquarists seeking an exotic yet manageable species.

Sexual Dimorphism
Distinguishing between male and female Ocellifer Catfish can be challenging. However, adult females tend to have a noticeably fuller body than their male counterparts. Additionally, sex differentiation can be achieved by examining the genital papillae, which provides a more definitive means of identification.

Natural Habitat
The Ocellifer Catfish is indigenous to various river basins across West and Central Africa, including the Senegal, Gambia, Volta, Niger (encompassing the Benue), and Chad systems. Its distribution extends to countries such as Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, and Nigeria. ?Typically, these Catfish inhabit slow-moving streams and backwaters within these basins. These environments are characterized by soft substrates and abundant cover, providing essential hiding spots and feeding grounds. The Ocellifer Catfish exhibits benthopelagic behaviour, often residing near the bottom but also swimming in midwater, and is known for its potamodromous migratory patterns within freshwater systems.
Breeding
Breeding the Ocellifer Catfish in home aquariums is a challenge that has not been successfully overcome. Commercial propagation is achieved through hormone-induced spawning. In the wild, these egg-scattering fish form distinct breeding pairs; however, they do not exhibit parental care, leaving the eggs to develop independently.
Diet & Feeding
The Ocellifer Catfish's omnivorous feeding habits make it a versatile species to care for. In the wild, their diet includes insect larvae, algae, gastropods, bivalves, sponges, crustaceans, and fish eggs. In captivity, they readily accept various food types, such as sinking pellets, catfish wafers, live or frozen bloodworms, blackworms, and brine shrimp. Additionally, incorporating vegetable matter like cucumber, courgette, and shelled peas is beneficial. However, due to their hearty appetite, it is crucial to avoid overfeeding, as they are prone to bloating; thus, feeding should be managed carefully to maintain their health, making the aquarist's role crucial in their care.
