Electric Blue Hap - Sciaenochromis ahli Fish Profile & Care Guide
Introduction
The Electric Blue Hap (Sciaenochromis ahli) is a popular aquarium fish and is an enchanting addition to any aquarium with its striking blue colouration and peaceful nature. Unfortunately, these fish are rarely sold in the hobby. Proper care, a suitable environment, and compatible tankmates will ensure these fish thrive and grace their keepers with their captivating beauty.
The Electric Blue Hap is considered a semi-aggressive species, and keeping only one male in a tank is advisable. However, in larger, spacious aquariums, a harem arrangement with several females can be maintained.
When selecting tankmates, careful consideration is essential, as smaller fish are at risk of being preyed upon. Suitable companions may include other large rift lake species such as Rostratus Cichlids, other Haplochromis Cichlids, Protomelas Cichlids, Nimbochromis Cichlids, and Synodontis Catfish.
It is prudent to avoid cohabitation with Aulonocara Cichlid species, as Electric Blue Hap males have been observed showing interest in Aulonocara females, leading to potential aggression and disturbances in the tank.
An adequately sized aquarium, measuring at least 5ft in length, is recommended for accommodating these fish. The aquascape should comprise open expanses of sand, rocky formations, and clusters of Vallisneria plant species to provide a naturalistic environment.
Incorporating ocean rocks to create sturdy structures that stretch from the tank's base to near the water's surface is beneficial. These structures should be thoughtfully designed to offer numerous crevices for the fish to explore while ensuring rock stability, even if the fish dig around and underneath them.
While coral sand or Aragonite substrate is often suggested to maintain hard and alkaline water conditions, Electric Blue Hap fish typically display more vibrant colours and feel more secure with a darker substrate. Therefore, opting for a darker substrate may be more favourable for these fish.
Electric Blue Haps are renowned for their dazzling electric blue body colour, which extends from their head to the tip of their tail. Their scales have a shimmering metallic appearance, making them a true show-stopper in any aquarium.
Mature males often display a bright yellow blaze on their dorsal fin, while females and juveniles may have a more subdued colouration with slight shades of blue and yellow. Electric Blue Haps from southern populations are distinguished by the presence of a distinctive white blaze on their dorsal surface, a characteristic that sets them apart from their northern counterparts.

Sexual Dimorphism
Distinguishing between male and female Electric Blue Haps is a straightforward process. Adult males exhibit a striking "electric blue" colouration, which may vary in intensity based on their mood. Conversely, females are smaller in size and display a considerably duller colouration. However, sexing juvenile fish can be challenging since they all possess the same colouration, making it difficult to discern their gender until they reach maturity.

Natural Habitat
In the wild, Electric Blue Haps are predominantly found in the rocky shorelines and deeper waters of Lake Malawi, one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes. This region provides an ideal habitat with plenty of rocky structures, caves, and crevices that these fish use for shelter and spawning.
Breeding
Electric Blue Haps exhibit a maternal mouthbrooding reproductive strategy. When preparing to spawn, the male's colouration intensifies, signifying his readiness to initiate the breeding process.
In their natural habitat, the male constructs a volcano-shaped structure with a flat top, serving as a spawning site. However, in the confines of a home aquarium, the male will select and clean a flat upright sloping rock and then engage in a courtship display to attract the females. Once a female accepts him, she proceeds to lay her eggs on the sloping rock's surface. As the eggs roll down towards the base of the rock, the male uses his anal fin to catch and fertilize them with milt.
Following fertilization, the female gathers the fertilized eggs into her mouth for incubation, repeating the process until she has no remaining eggs. The incubation period can last up to approximately 25 days, during which the eggs are safeguarded in the female's mouth until they eventually hatch into free-swimming fry.
The newly hatched fry is sufficiently developed to consume baby brine shrimp immediately after its release. A typical brood size for Electric Blue Haps amounts to approximately 50 offspring.
Diet & Feeding
In their natural habitat, Electric Blue Haps feeds primarily on small aquatic organisms, including insects, crustaceans, and plankton. In captivity, they readily accept high-quality commercial fish pellets, flakes, and freeze-dried foods. For optimal health and colouration, it's advisable to supplement their diet with occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
