This species thrives in tropical freshwater environments characterised by soft to moderately hard water. These Tetras inhabit clear, slow-moving streams and rivers with ample vegetation, providing shelter and feeding opportunities. Due to their limited distribution and ongoing threats from habitat degradation, pollution, and the introduction of non-native species, A. smykalai is currently classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
Breeding
The breeding habits of Blue Diamond Tetras are not extensively documented, but available information provides insights into their reproductive behaviour. This species is an open-water egg scatterer, exhibiting no parental care. In captivity, successful breeding has been achieved by maintaining a separate spawning aquarium with soft, acidic water, subdued lighting, and the inclusion of spawning mops or fine-leaved plants like Java moss to facilitate egg deposition.
