Introduction
The Bela Adormecida Tetra (Moenkhausia bellasomniosa) is a small characin described in 2019 from Brazil. The species name refers to the nearby Serra do Curicuriari, locally known as “Sleeping Beauty”, which is reflected in the Latin name bellasomniosa. Like other Moenkhausia, the Bela Adormecida Tetra is best treated as a social, mid-water shoaling fish that spends much of its time in open water, diving into cover if alarmed. Observations of very similar species in aquaria show that they are far more confident and display better colour and natural behaviour when kept in a proper group rather than in pairs or trios. For this species, it is sensible to recommend a minimum of eight individuals, with ten to fifteen or more being ideal in a suitably sized aquarium. A larger shoal not only looks more impressive, but it also helps spread any low-level fin-nipping or chasing within the group, which is standard advice for other Moenkhausia Tetras.
Aquarium care should focus on recreating the key features of its Rio Negro forest-stream environment rather than chasing exact numbers on a test kit. In captivity, that translates to soft, acidic conditions, low mineral content, and very clean, well-filtered water with minimal fluctuation. A dark substrate, botanicals or leaves, and pieces of bogwood help to release tannins and create the muted, tea-coloured look of blackwater. Floating plants and dense marginal vegetation will provide shade and broken sight lines, while still leaving open areas through the centre of the tank for the shoal to swim. Flow should be gentle to moderate with plenty of oxygen, reflecting the mix of quiet pools and small, faster runs where it is collected.

Sexual Dimorphism
Sexual dimorphism in Bela Adormecida Tetras follows the typical Moenkhausia pattern and is best documented in the original species description. Mature males develop tiny bony hooks on part of the anal fin, specifically along the outer section of the last unbranched ray and adjacent branched rays, while females lack these structures entirely. These hooks are only visible at close range but are a reliable way for specialists to distinguish sexes in preserved or carefully handled specimens, since overall body shape and colour pattern are otherwise very similar between males and females. As with many small characids, aquarists may also notice that well-conditioned females appear slightly deeper-bodied and fuller in the belly when carrying eggs, but this is a secondary, variable cue compared with the presence of anal-fin hooks in adult males.

Natural Habitat
The Bela Adormecida Tetra is a blackwater characin restricted to the upper Rio Negro basin in Amazonas state, Brazil. It is currently known only from small tributaries of the Rio Curicuriari and Rio Tiquié, both right-bank tributaries of the upper Rio Negro, giving it a relatively narrow, localised distribution. Ecological notes from the type series describe the species inhabiting non-flooded “terra firme” forest streams with very dark, tea-coloured water, where it occurs in small pools and short, faster-flowing runs over a rocky substrate. These creeks are heavily shaded by intact rainforest, with a bottom covered in rocks, sand, and leaf litter, and a high load of dissolved humic substances, resulting in low conductivity and low hardness water typical of Rio Negro blackwater environments. Within this microhabitat, the species appears to occupy the mid-water zone of quiet pockets and gentle currents rather than strong rapids, and no records currently exist from the central Rio Negro channel or from floodplain lakes, underscoring its association with narrow, forested headwater streams.
Breeding
Breeding behaviour has not yet been described in detail specifically for Bela Adormecida Tetras, but its reproduction can be inferred with reasonable confidence from the genus as a whole and closely related species. Like other Moenkhausia, it is almost certainly a free-spawning egg scatterer that provides no parental care, releasing eggs among fine plants or near the water surface rather than guarding a nest. Studies on congeners such as Moenkhausia oligolepis and the Red-eye Tetra show that spawning occurs in soft, acidic water, usually in dim conditions, with pairs or small groups scattering adhesive eggs that stick to plants or other fine structures. Adults readily consume their own eggs and fry, so they must be removed after spawning. In aquaria, eggs of related species hatch quickly under warm, stable conditions, and the tiny fry initially require microscopic foods before they are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp; M. bellasomniosa is expected to follow the same general pattern.
Diet & Feeding
Bela Adormecida Tetras function primarily as small invertivores, taking a mix of aquatic insect larvae and terrestrial insects that fall from the surrounding forest, often picked from the surface or taken from the drift. These Tetras also actively graze on biofilm and algae, along with microinvertebrates, which fits the general pattern of a flexible micro-predator that will also browse aufwuchs when available. In the aquarium, it is therefore best treated as an opportunistic omnivore with a strong preference for small animal foods, offered a varied diet of quality micro granules or fine pellets, supplemented daily with live or frozen fare such as daphnia, cyclops and small insect larvae to support good condition, colour and breeding behaviour.
