Snow White Cichlid - Pseudotropheus socolofi Var. Albino Fish Profile & Care Guide
Introduction
The Snow White Cichlid (Pseudotropheus socolofi) is a member of the Cichlidae family, distinguished by its rare albino variety, which is highly prized by enthusiasts of African Cichlids. Predominantly tank-bred, these cichlids are accessible in the aquarium trade and are relatively straightforward to maintain, making them suitable for both novice and advanced aquarists. Typically found in the middle layers of the water column, the Snow White Cichlid is noted for its peaceful demeanour compared to other Pseudotropheus species.
This species is sociable and generally coexists well with other non-aggressive fish in a community tank setting, though it does exhibit some territorial behaviours. Suitable tankmates include various Malawi cichlids, Plecos, and Angelfish, while Danios, Tetras, Gouramis, and invertebrates are less compatible. A male-to-female ratio of 1:3 is recommended to minimize territorial disputes.
Aquascaping for Snow White Cichlids offers many creative possibilities but requires certain precautions. It is advisable to avoid stem plants, which these fish tend to disturb, opting instead for sturdier species like Anubias Nana or Anubias Frazeri that can be securely anchored. Sand substrates are optimal for maintaining appropriate pH levels by adding crushed coral or oyster shells. While driftwood like Mopani or Cholla enhances the aesthetic of a cichlid tank, it can initially tint the water brown with tannins, which can be resolved with regular water changes. Strategically placed rocks and stones create appreciated hiding spots and caves for these rock-dwelling fish.
Snow White Cichlids are characterized by their unique, patternless, all-white bodies and fins. Their pectoral, dorsal, caudal, and anal fins exhibit a translucent white colouration. This distinctive pigmentation results from a lack of melanin-producing cells. The most striking feature of these fish is their red eyes, caused by visible red blood cells in the retina; a trait typically obscured in other fish by pigmentation.

Sexual Dimorphism
Identifying the gender of Snow White Cichlids is straightforward. Males are distinguishable by the presence of distinct egg spots on their anal fins and typically exhibit slightly larger pelvic fins compared to females. Furthermore, males generally have a larger overall body size. In contrast, females possess slightly shorter fins with rounded edges, providing clear visual cues for differentiation.

Natural Habitat
Snow White Cichlids are indigenous to the shallow waters of Lake Malawi in East Africa, predominantly found along the Mozambique coast. These cichlids occupy environments characterized by rocky terrains interspersed with sandy substrates, typical of their natural habitat.
Breeding
Snow White Cichlids typically reach sexual maturity at approximately eight months of age. Breeding these cichlids can be successfully achieved with a pair of male and female fish. To facilitate breeding, preparing an aquarium specifically for the fry is crucial, ensuring that the water quality is pristine and that beneficial bacteria are well-established. Male Snow White Cichlids exhibit readiness to breed by constructing a nest in the sandy substrate and will vigilantly guard this area, only permitting females to approach. This behaviour can be quite engaging to observe.
During breeding, a female may deposit up to 40 eggs in the nest. Snow White Cichlids are mouthbrooders, meaning the eggs are collected and held in the female's mouth, where the male subsequently fertilizes them. The female will carry the fertilized eggs in her mouth for up to three weeks. After this period, transferring the adults back to the main display tank is advisable, while the fry should remain in the nursery tank.
Caring for the fry involves feeding them finely sized food such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and microworms, coupled with frequent water changes to maintain optimal water conditions. Successfully raising the fry through the critical initial 4-5 months is a challenging yet rewarding process that culminates in successfully breeding Snow White Cichlids.
Diet & Feeding
Snow White Cichlids primarily exhibit herbivorous feeding habits, thriving on a diet rich in plant and algae material in their natural habitat of Lake Malawi. Maintaining a diet that closely mimics their natural intake in captivity is crucial for their health. This typically includes high-quality spirulina-based flakes and pellets supplemented with vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or zucchini. The occasional inclusion of small amounts of protein, like brine shrimp, can be beneficial but should be provided sparingly to prevent digestive issues and to maintain optimal health and colouration. Regular feeding schedules, with small quantities several times a day, are recommended to mimic natural foraging behaviours and support their metabolic needs efficiently.
