Senegal Minnow - Raiamas senegalensis Fish Profile & Care Guide
Introduction
The Senegal Minnow (Raiamas senegalensis) is a striking freshwater species native to West African rivers and streams, including those in Senegal and neighbouring regions. Recognizable for its streamlined, silvery body adorned with fewer than 15 vertical bars along its sides and a distinctive round spot on the caudal peduncle, this fish's colouration includes a greyish-green dorsum that gradually fades into its lighter silvery sides. The vertical bars become smaller towards the head, enhancing its elegant, elongated appearance. Combined with its active swimming style, these markings make the Senegal Minnow a visually appealing addition to an aquarium.
The Senegal Minnow is a naturally sociable species, often observed in loose shoals in its native habitat. In an aquarium setting, these fish thrive in groups of five or more, which helps reduce stress and promotes their natural shoaling behaviours. Other peaceful, similarly sized fish, ideally those accustomed to moderate water flow, should be the Senegal minnow's tankmates. Suitable companions include various African tetras, rainbowfish, and other non-aggressive, fast-swimming species. Slow-moving or long-finned fish that might become stressed by the minnows' active swimming habits should be avoided.
An ideal aquarium setup for Senegal Minnows requires a tank of at least 110 litres, featuring a soft substrate to accommodate their natural behaviour. Although generally peaceful, Senegal Minnows benefit from an environment rich in hiding spots, rocks, and vegetation, offering them areas to retreat and reducing stress. These structures provide security and replicate their natural habitat, encouraging active exploration and healthy behaviours. Ensuring the water is well-oxygenated is essential to support their active nature and mimic the flowing conditions of their native streams. With the proper care and setup, Raiamas senegalensis can become a lively, harmonious addition to a community aquarium.

Sexual Dimorphism
Sexual dimorphism in Senegal Minnows is subtle, making it challenging to distinguish males from females without close observation. Females may appear slightly larger and rounder, especially when carrying eggs, while males tend to have a more streamlined appearance. However, these differences are often not pronounced, and sexing individuals in a community tank can be complex, particularly without prior breeding activity as a reference.

Natural Habitat
The Senegal Minnow is widely distributed across Western Africa, reaching as far east as the Nile basin. It inhabits various river basins, including the Nile, Lake Chad, Niger, Gambia, Senegal, and Volta, as well as coastal basins such as Sassandra, Bandama, Comoé, Tano, Pra, Ouémé, Ogun, and Sanaga, which mark the southern limit of its range. Additionally, it is found in the Cross River in Cameroon. The countries where this species has been recorded include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, and Togo.
These fish thrive in well-oxygenated, fast-flowing waters. Their natural habitat features clear, often shallow streams with sandy or rocky substrates interspersed with submerged vegetation and roots. These environments offer ample hiding spots and food sources, allowing the fish to forage for invertebrates while avoiding predators.
Breeding
The Senegal Minnow has breeding habits that are not well-documented in captivity, and successful spawning in aquariums is rare. These fish are considered seasonal spawners in the wild, possibly influenced by environmental cues such as rainfall, temperature changes, and water flow. They likely exhibit egg-scattering behaviour, where eggs are released and fertilized among vegetation or other substrate without further parental care. Mimicking these seasonal cues, such as increasing water flow and slightly lowering the temperature during water changes, may help encourage breeding, though reproduction in an aquarium setting remains uncommon.
Diet & Feeding
Senegal Minnows' diet is omnivorous, consisting mainly of small invertebrates, insects, and plant matter in their natural habitat. In captivity, they adapt well to a varied diet, including high-quality flakes or pellets supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Including occasional vegetable-based foods or spirulina flakes can help round out their diet, keeping them healthy and vibrant.
