Süsswassertang - Lomariopsis lineata : Aquarium Plant Profile & Care Guide
The aquatic plant commonly referred to as Süsswassertang (Lomariopsis lineata) originates from freshwater environments in Southeast Asia. Though often mistaken for liverworts such as Pellia, Süsswassertang is, in fact, the gametophyte stage of a fern species. Its unique texture, resembling soft, dark green seaweed, makes it popular for aquascapers seeking natural, organic scaping elements. It is not a true moss but behaves similarly in an aquarium setting, forming dense, sponge-like mats that are ideal for shrimp and fry to shelter in. The plant's extremely undemanding nature, tolerating a wide range of conditions, should reassure both beginners and seasoned aquascapers of its suitability for their tanks.
For best results, Süsswassertang should be placed in shaded or moderately lit areas of the aquarium. It does not root in the substrate but can be attached to hardscapes such as driftwood or rock, where clumps gradually form. It prefers softer water and benefits from good water circulation. While CO2 supplementation is not required, consistent fertilisation and stable water parameters will promote healthy, even growth. Over time, it may need thinning to prevent it from smothering nearby plants or hardscape features.
Propagation of Süsswassertang is straightforward. Sections can be gently pulled apart or trimmed and then reattached elsewhere in the tank. Given time and suitable conditions, these fragments will grow into new colonies. Its slow-to-moderate growth rate means maintenance is infrequent, yet its resilience and aesthetic appeal make it a staple in many low-tech and shrimp-focused aquariums.
