Amazon sword - Echinodorus Grisebachii 'Amazonicus' : Aquarium Plant Profile & Care Guide
The Amazon Sword (Echinodorus amazonicus), native to River Basins in Central and South America, is a staple in the planted aquarium hobby. Its large, lance-shaped leaves can grow up to 50 cm tall, making it ideal for background planting in medium to large tanks. This hardy rosette plant, known for its resilience, is well-suited for beginner and experienced aquarists due to its ease of care. Its lush, narrower green foliage adds a striking focal point and provides shelter for fish and fry. However, its size and fast growth require space and occasional maintenance to prevent it from shading smaller plants.
Echinodorus amazonicus benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate to support optimal growth, as it is primarily a root feeder. While it tolerates low CO2 levels, additional CO2 and iron-rich root tabs promote faster growth and deeper green colouration. Medium lighting is typically sufficient, although more intense light may help the plant produce more compact leaves. Regular pruning of older or damaged leaves will keep the plant healthy and prevent it from overcrowding other species. Once established, it will anchor firmly and serve as a long-lasting centrepiece in the aquascape.
Amazon Sword propagation is achieved through adventitious plantlets (new plants that develop from the parent plant, usually at the base of the stem) or root division. Under favourable conditions, the plant may produce a flower stalk above the water surface, from which small plantlets emerge. These can be separated and replanted once they develop roots. Alternatively, mature plants with multiple crowns can be carefully divided at the root. Providing consistent nutrients, stable water parameters, and enough space ensures successful propagation and a thriving display.
